DeleteHow do you do the backgrounds? I love your work! I was teaching my 7th graders some ink techniques and your work is great to see. Do you mount the pieces on a piece of black scratchboard?
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for you very kind words about my art, and I'm so glad I am able to help out with your ink techniques.
DeleteWhile I draw the animals completely with a black ball point ink pen, the backgrounds are painted in using black inks. An inexpensive way to do it is with India Ink. It's waterproof, gives a very deep dark mat black and dries quickly. I use more expensive inks, but there is really no need if you are teaching techniques. My wife is a teacher so I honor your profession! And would love to hear how your 7th graders do with your lesson.
Please feel free to ask any questions anytime.
All the best,
Tim Jeffs
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBrandon. Thank you so much for saying that! Your very kind words mean so much. All the best to you, Tim
DeleteHey Tim, I LOVE your artwork! What do you use for reference material? Do you take photographs and then work from those photos?
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your kind words. Yes, I take photos and also ask other photographers permission to use theirs, and a lot of my work comes out of my head. All the best, Tim
DeleteUnbelievable. The fur of those animals! Gosh... And the light and shadows under the sea!
ReplyDeleteAmazing
simply, amazing
Thank you so very much for your kind and meaningful words. I am so happy that you enjoyed looking at my artwork. Its kind people like you that keep me wanted to draw more. Have a wonderful day!
DeleteDo you sell originals? I would be interested in purchasing a piece. Thank you, Leslie
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie. Thanks for visiting my blog. I'm not selling my original because they are for gallery showing, but I do sell very high end signed lithographs and prints of all my work. The quality is remarkable as you can tell from the reviews of buyers. You can purchase them in my shop at https://www.etsy.com/shop/TimJeffsArt?ref=si_shop
DeleteThank you so much for asking.
All the best,
Tim Jeffs

ReplyDeleteHello, I think your art is outstanding. I have a question about your shading techniques. I am just starting with pen and ink drawings. what do you use for your drawings? And i really want to know how you shade with your different tones on some of your drawings? Especially your leopard drawing.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Hi and thank you so much for visiting my blog and taking the time to write me. And thank you so much for your kind words about my work. I draw with a ballpoint pen made by Uniball. It's there powertank line. You can pick them up at most art supply stores or even online. http://www.jetpens.com/Uni-Power-Tank-Ballpoint-Pen-0.7-mm-Blue-Body-Blue-Ink/pd/2905
DeleteAll the shading is done with the ballpoint pens. You can get them in different tip sizes from .05 to 1.0. One thing about ballpoint pens is that you can get a very light line using very little pressure, or a very black solid by applying more pressure. I would suggest taking paper and just experiment with drawing different weight lines. Thanks again for writing! And good luck doing your ink drawings. All the best, Tim
I'm sorry. The link I included for the Uniball pens was for a blue ink version. I use only black ink. Here the correct link:

your art is really good. how do you make your lines so light and smooth? and how do you make it glow like on your panda drawing?
ReplyDeleteI make my lines so light by drawing with very little pressure. I just let the weight of the pen glide across the paper with out adding any additional pressure. Ball point pens with drip, so make sure to wipe off the tip after about 10 strokes. This take time to prefect, but you will get use to it. The glowing effect is by making so much of the drawing black that whats left of the white paper seems to glow through. I hope this helps. And good luck drawing!!
ReplyDeleteHI! your art is just incredible. Those lines are so light and glowing. Do you use oil paint for your backgrounds? Its so outstanding I need to know!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I use india ink for my backgrounds, not oil paint. If you friend my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/TimJeffsArt and go to a post from March 2014 I talk about the ink i use. Good luck! Tim
DeleteAre you using more than 1 pen in your drawings? By the way your animals are crazy good!
ReplyDeletehow do you make those whiskers on the leopard? outstanding!!
ReplyDeleteI have had troubles making light and barely visible lines with ballpoint pen. im using the internets help and they are saying exerting no pressure on your page makes very light and delicate lines. i am using this technique but I cant seem to make different shades especially the light ones. PLEASE HELP
ReplyDeleteIt just takes lots and lots of practice. There really isn't any specific advise I can offer except draw with the lightest touch you can, and then slowly add pressure to get a variety of darker lines. Try all different types of pens until you find your perfect fit, the ones I use may not work for you. Good luck!!
Deletewhat kind of uni ball pen do you use ?
ReplyDeleteI use Uniball Powertank pens. Tips sizes 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0. Thanks for commenting and dropping by my blog!
Deletewhere do you buy a powertank? im interested in buying
ReplyDeleteYou can buy them on line. Here's one place:

thank you so much! you are very helpful. I love your drawings!
ReplyDeleteHi Tim! I think your artwork is truly amazing and incredible. I also like to draw with a ballpoint pen; it's incredible how much depth you can get out of such a simple tool. Really like how you do the black backgrounds. I think I may have to try that. Just wanted to say keep up the amazing work! Gorgeous! :) - Melissa
ReplyDeleteHi Melissa! I couldn't agree with you more. I love that all the art supplies I need are a simple pen and paper. So glad to hear from another lover of ballpoint pens! And there's something I love about a stark background of black. It lets the drawing really pop off the page. So good luck with trying it out. And thank you so much for dropping by my blog, looking and then taking the time to write. It really means a lot to me. Take Care Melissa, and happy drawing!!
DeleteThanks Jeff! Good luck as well and keep up the awesome work. Here is my website (I need to do some updating and posting of more recent work) but thought I'd share with a fellow artist! Alot of the stuff I do is graphic design in Illustrator as well, more grungy stuff but it's fun :) http://melissaholbrook.com/
DeleteHi Melissa. Thank you so much for looking at my blog and leaving your very kinds words about my work. I truly appreciate it. Your work is wonderful and inspiring! Thanks for giving me the link to your site, and please keep in touch. All the best.
DeleteFabulous work! very inspiring… I'm looking to try a new medium. One question I didn't see you mention, but I'm curious to know what type of paper you ink on? Watercolor seems like it would be too rough and textures for your smooth results?
ReplyDeleteHi Barbie. That is so nice of you too say! Thank you! Good question about the paper I draw on. I didn't realize I forgot to mention it. I use two different papers. One is a thick 140 lb hot press water color paper. I use this if the drawing demands very dark patterns (like spots), and if I'm doing much finer work (like fur) I use the same paper that is in the moleskine drawing books. I work on sheets that are 11"x17".
DeleteHi Tim, your work is great! And thank you so much for explaining your technique in such detailed way.. that's very inspiring! Good luck :)
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome Tommaso! Thank you so much for your interest in my artwork and your kind words about it. Have a wonderful Day!
DeleteHello, your work is amazing!I just started out pen drawings and I lpve your work. Im using microns and ink and you art is goals. May I use them as reference images? It won't be nearly the same and they will only be in my sketchbook as practice. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Tim, I'm with the Des Moines Arts Commission a non- profit organization in Washington State. We have a one day event in the winter called Squid-A-Rama. It is run in conjunction with Highline College and has various art projects for children. I'm wondering if we could use your fantastic squid drawing for some promotional materials if we gave you credit. Thanks, Fred Andrews
ReplyDeleteHi, your stuff is cool. By the way I'm here because about two years ago I'd been searching for and elephant to draw and found yours, so I have a similar elephant drawing, which I plan to post on my tumbl account. Is it okay for you? (I plan to write about yours being the original and post a link to here with mine.) (I don't profit from it if it matters.)
ReplyDeleteHi niko. That's absolutely fine. And thank you for writing and giving me the credit and putting in a link to my elephant drawing. I'm happy my drawing inspired you to draw! Have a great day. Tim
Deletea shrubbery and fabulous Painting .This is an amazing blog. Thanks a lot for sharing.I will be waiting for your next post.
ReplyDeleteDear Best Performing Art College in India. Thank you very much for you extremely kind comments! I'm so glad you enjoy my ink drawings and blog. All the best, Tim
ReplyDeleteOn the cover of your book: Intricate Ink: animals in detail, you have a chameleon, half in color half in pen. Have you ever drawn in pen then colored over? I also draw with pen, a rapidograph which is perfect for stippling, but I want to start adding color because some of my themes such as tropical fish and salt water game fish, need it.
ReplyDeleteYour work is so amazing, I almost want to quit because it doesn't come close to yours.
Hey Tiny Dawg! Thank you very much for your extremely kind words about my drawings. First off....Don't say Quit! If you love to draw and make art that is all that matters. You will improve with every drawing and being creative and having fun is what is most important. Yes, I have done ink drawing and colored them. It works very well. Give it a try, I'm sure you will like it. Good luck with all of your artwork, and keep on creating beautiful art!!
DeleteThank you I needed to hear that! I saw on your Etsy shop you sell prints. What type of printer do you use? It must be amazing to reproduce those colors.
DeleteI sell 2 types of prints on Etsy of all my drawings. Very high quality photographic matt paper prints, and signed Giclee Prints on museum quality paper. The reproduction quality of the colors are amazing! Thanks for asking.

ReplyDeleteWhat size are your originals?
ReplyDeleteAll of my drawing are 12"X15" Thanks for asking.
DeleteI read on your facebook that you ink in the background with ProArt ink. How do you prevent the 'brush streaks?' Do you paint several layers?
ReplyDeleteHi Mabel. Yes, I do several layers in different directions. Thanks for writing and for your interest in my art!
DeleteHello Jeff, would there be a printer you would recommend to another pen&ink artist to print at home for the most accurate detail? I'm sure at your level you have them professionally printed, but I'm still in the 'starving artist' level. LOL!! Thank you
ReplyDeleteHi there! The only printers that I have seen that do a professional quality print are Epson's pro-line ink jet printers. But they are fairly expensive.
Deletehey awesome paintings by you like it very much
ReplyDeleteHi Tim. I really love your artwork. Do you use archival ballpoint pens? I don't think they exist. Do you sell the originals, or do you make prints. It seems that the ink in ballpoint pens fades over time. I just wonder how you get around this? Thanks Sally
ReplyDeleteHello! Thanks for writing, and for your very kinds words about my drawings. I use high quality pens, and after many years haven't seen the drawings fade at all. I sell prints in my Etsy store here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TimJeffsArt
DeleteHi! I absolutely love your drawings. I think they're incredible. I was wondering how you avoid smudging the ink with your hand as you draw? I draw and it's always a struggle when the pencil ink gets on my hand and smudges where it shouldn't smudge! Any tips?
ReplyDeleteHi Mary! Thank you for writing, and for your extremely kind words about my art. I always cover the drawing with velum paper as I work on it. That way noting gets smudged and I see the part of the drawing that is covered. Good luck and happy creating!
DeleteThese are amazing, your attention to detail is stunning. I can't imagine how long that must take. I love drawing with pen and ink, i'm just now starting to get the hang of drawing textures. Anyways, amazing stuff, keep on creating
ReplyDeleteHi Savannah! Thank you very much for your extremely kind words about my drawings! They take lots of time to complete, but I enjoy the slow process. And I'm glad to hear that you're drawing and enjoying it. Keep creating too!
DeleteHey Tim,
ReplyDeleteYour drawing are fantastic but I believe the image labeled as a leopard is actually a jaguar. This is the site that made me think this http://www.wildcatsanctuary.org/the-top-5-differences-between-jaguars-and-leopards/
Tim,
ReplyDeleteLove your works. Stunning, lifelike, and personality. I have a coupla of your books that I dearly love and just purchased an e-book off your etsy page. Now what I need is what types of paper to copy to. I've used a vellum and matte photo paper and they just won't do. What would you suggest? Thanks
